Ceramic is a staple material in the utopia palette.
Straight from the ground in Germany or Italy, where we produce our bowls, the clay is transformed into finely rimmed bowls .
Clay is a challenging material in our production as it stabilizes by firing. In the firing process the clay bakes, shrinks and solidifies into ceramic. This gives us the added challenge of accurate making, as the size changes after firing.
We work with two types of clay: stoneware and earthenware.
The earthenware clay has a porous surface which creates a contrast to the shiny glass. Earthenware clay is lower in the firing, and has a dull, full sound to it and a dusty feel.
Stoneware clay is hard and has a high sound. It is heavy and very stable, with almost metallic glazes and a dense feel to the touch.

CERAMIC EDITION
Hand turned on a wheel in Italy, this collection comes in both a dark earthenware ceramic and a terracotta finish. The dark ceramic is from the Grappa region in the North, whereas the terracotta comes from the heart of Puglia.

Creating a raku bowl is a challenge, requiring heat and swift movements.
The ceramic bowl is thrown and fired, after which the surface is glazed by splashing the liquid pigment over the surface. This glaze is fired in 900°C and removed from the kiln to allow the glaze to cool and small cracks to appear on the surface.
To prevent the bowl from exploding, it needs to be covered up to retain heat.
Our bowls are immersed in oak shavings, in which they slowly cool creating fumes that colour the surface black.
Highly volatile, the process is spectacular and the results unique.
