Wheel Throwing

Utopia and Utility TSV vase made from a ball of clay.
Ball of clay

It all starts with a ball of clay. Kneaded to be malleable and perfectly smooth, the clay is worked until it has the perfect consistency and all air bubbles are pushed out.

Throwing on a wheel

The ball of clay is then centred on a throwing wheel, a horizontal plate which can spin. Once the clay is centred, the wheel is put to motion and the hands of the potter start pulling up and down to create the desired shape.

Finishing

The finesse on our pieces is working to accurate and consistent scale, and creating a perfectly smooth rim for the glass to be located on.
